Boxing can be a brutal sport to photograph.
Blood and snot all over the canvas, and often on your clothes. But it can also be one of the hardest challenges to capture 'the moment'. But get it right and you will be on a high all the way through the match.

Shooting positions are often governed by how much space is left around the apron, once the judges, the corner men, the journalists and the ring girls have their spots, the last thing a promotor at the rehional championships thinks about is a spot for the photographer.
So, arrive early for your pass, and pick your spot.
At regional shows the only lighting is often one large wattage bulb over the arena and one or two from the corners - and straight into your lens. You have to be manoevrable and flexible - and the action is fast and furious. Take a large 1 Gb or 2Gb card and edit the rubbish out between rounds - take plenty of batteries - and if you can use flash - use it. Otherwise bump the ISO to 1600 - and hope for the best, as you will need a high shutter speed as well as a wide aperture.
In Hartlepool there is a great tradition of boxing stretching back decaded and the town has some fine boxers for the 21st century - among them Michael Hunter and 'Bulldog' Bennett. This night had some really explosive action - Hunter sent a full house at the famous Headland venue The Borough Hall, into ecstasy after a tough examination by Marc Callaghan before the contest was stopped in round 10. Bennett beat the Llanelli challenger Phillips in another gruelling boxing match.

Photographs were used in regional morning and evening newspapers as well as Metro in london and Welsh newspapers.
